Our CASA volunteers make a huge difference in the lives of the children we work with. A CASA is
assigned a case and is involved until the case is resolved. Throughout that process the CASA volunteer
gets to know the child, the family, and anyone else involved in the case. The CASA volunteer meets
regularly with the child and gets to know them to determine their needs and recommend what is in the
child’s best interest. The CASA volunteer communicates this information about the child to the court so
the child’s voice can be heard and so the child does not become “lost” in the system.
Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds. The time you spend volunteering is flexible
which allows people with fulltime jobs or children at home to volunteer. You don’t need any specific
experience or education prior to becoming a volunteer. We provide you with all the training you need.
You will never be in court alone. Our CASA program is one of the few in the State that has a fulltime
attorney who will appear with you at every hearing and prepare you for what to expect.
Right now there are over 200 children in the child welfare system in Lawrence County alone.
Currently we do not have enough volunteers to provide each of those children with a CASA. There are
over 100 children on our waitlist, waiting for a community member to step up and be their voice.
